Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, recently visited Year 5 students at Ashdown Primary School in Crowborough to speak to them about the workings of Parliament and answer their questions.

The children have been learning about the democratic system of the UK, the role of Government and Parliament, and international organisations such as the United Nations.

Laura Masson, Head of School – Juniors said:

The students were fascinated by the visit and came out of the session excited to have learnt more about democracy and how our parliament works. They were pleased to have been able to ask their own questions so that they could better understand current affairs and to delve deeper into topics which really matter to the children of this school, such as climate change and eco issues.

They had prepared some very insightful questions relating to their learning and quizzed Nusrat on her role as a Member of Parliament and the law-making process, and they were also keen to discuss topical issues such as protecting the environment.

I regularly visit Wealden schools and I met with students at Ashdown Primary School last year for a virtual Q&A session. I’m pleased to be back in person to answer their questions and explain my role as the voice for Wealden in the Commons Chamber. It is fantastic to see how engaged and passionate our young Wealden residents are and I was very impressed by their in-depth knowledge on current affairs. I am hoping to welcome the students and their teachers in Westminster soon, for their first-hand experience of our democracy.
