Stephen Evans, 17, from Crowborough was winner of the Young Volunteer of the Year for his contribution to the Uckfield Volunteer Centre, offering free one-to-one IT support and training to the public.

Trevor Brand was awarded the Community Volunteer Hero of the year for his work with the Junior Football Club in Hailsham and the Crowborough and District Junior Football League.

Council Chairman, Cllr Chris Hardy said:

This year we wanted to highlight the tremendous contributions volunteers are making to Wealden’s communities.

So many people channel their energies into helping other people and the environment but rarely receive the thanks and recognition of the wider public. Community volunteers are taken for granted, but without them we really would notice a difference. By finding and rewarding some outstanding examples of volunteering in Wealden, we hope others will appreciate the sense of purpose and fulfilment volunteering can bring.

Volunteer Group of the Year was awarded to The Smith Family, a family of three generations, headed by Neil and Penny Smith who attended the event with their two grandchildren, Georgia and Finlay Band.  The family work together as a strong and determined team with a mission to keep their part of the Parish of Hooe clear of litter.

The evening successfully raised over £3,000 for the Chairman’s nominated charities.  These are The JPK Project which provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities, and rural employment initiative Wealden Works.
