The paintings of a local Sixth Form student have been turned into a calendar, cards and prints to raise money for projects in Africa.
Each year a group of students from Beacon Academy in Crowborough visit The Gambia to see first hand the problems that the country faces from an economic, educational and environmental viewpoint. Collectively they have raised between £10,000 and £20,000 each year to fund initiatives in the villages they visit.
Tyler Farrow’s watercolours of animals and birds have been turned into a 2018 Calendar, signed prints and greetings cards, thanks to support from Longridge Print based on the Millbrook Industrial Estate. The greetings cards are split into two packs of six – a Spring/Summer and an Autumn/Winter collection.
Tyler now hopes, with the generosity of the local community, his artwork will raise lots of money for the cause.
Tyler told CrowboroughLife:
I taught myself to paint with watercolours over the summer holidays and really enjoyed experimenting with different ideas on how to represent each animal or bird. Some I’ve done very detailed and lifelike, such as the hare, whereas others are more abstract, like the flamingo.
I’m really looking forward to the school trip to The Gambia in December as it will be an amazing experience to live in another culture and we will be helping to make a difference to the local villagers in improving their daily lives. I don’t think there will be time for any painting whilst I’m there, although I will take my sketch book and camera, so I hope to capture some of the wildlife this way and then paint them when I get home.
