DIY store in Crowborough to become a builders merchants

Travis Perkins has applied for planning permission to turn the former T&T DIY store on Farningham Road into a builders merchants.

The car park will be altered to create a one-way system with a second exit onto Farningham Road.  External racking for timber and building materials will be installed with security fencing around the perimeter of the site.

The plans that have been submitted to Wealden District Council on 9th February, explain that they will be only minor material alterations to the existing building.  The mezzanine floor level will be reduced in size and there will be new tool hire workshop.

Travis Perkins have said the proposed development may allow them to steadily increase job numbers over the next 5 to 7 years.

The national building chain is primarily focused towards professional tradesmen – they state in the application that across the chain just 5% sales are to the general public.

It’s business as usual and we intend to introduce a wider range of products over time.  In particular, Travis Perkins has a large range of heavyside products, such as bricks and timber, and will provide this alongside lightside products and a tool hire service.  There are also further plans to introduce our kitchen showroom business, Benchmarx.

Travis Perkins will work hard to retain the T&T business, as well as add further product ranges and choice for customers.  Customers of Travis Perkins can access tens of thousands of products in-branch and through our extended range capability, all of which will soon be available to customers in Crowborough.

Steve Edwards sold T&T Sussex Plant Hire Ltd to Travis Perkins PLC on 21st April for an undisclosed sum.   Travis Perkins have said they will take some time to understand the local community, but customers can expect to start seeing some of the changes in the coming months.  Travis Perkins is working with the existing team of 16 employers and hope to grow the business and the team in the future.

Travis Perkins PLC operates 21 businesses across the UK and owns 19 product brands, including 600 branches of Travis Perkins, over 150 trade-only Benchmarx kitchen outlets and 200 Tile Giant showrooms.  In 2004 Travis Perkins, bought Wickes in a £950m deal.

  1. We have not long moved to Crowborough and as a tradesman (Electrician) T&T fullfiled most of my requirements especially items that not all realise what us Electricians are expected to carry out. Where we used to live some of those items I used to get from Travis Perkins but they wouldnt accept me as a trade account even if I am a cash account. Nothing to do with credit but because I wasnt a “builder” so I had to pay normal rates. T&T gave me trade rates but now TP are running the show I will be back to full price. I am probably not the only tradesman that this will effect. Especially here in Crowborough, most of the trades have to be multi skilled as this is what customers want. Once they find someone they trust they want them to do as much as possible. There will be loads that wont meet TP’s high requirements.
