Assistant Head of Years 10 and 11 at Beacon Academy, Mrs Layne, was presented with the award for the “Pastoral Care Provider of the Year” for the Wealden and Lewes districts.
One nominator commented:
The energy she gives, the joy she provides, and the effort she puts in is truly exemplary.
Every year, during the summer exam period, Mrs Layne plans, creates and organises an impressive nutritious pre-exam buffet breakfast for Year 11 students every morning that there is an exam, providing an astonishing 2500 breakfasts over the exam period. Mrs Layne decorates Café Beech, the school’s cafeteria with tablecloths, bunting and flowers, and ensures the students are provided with the opportunity to see their relevant subject staff and meet with friends, ensuring that they are well fed, hydrated and fully supported right up to the last minute, prior to the start of the exam.
Mrs Layne was surprised but delighted to receive the award:
I had the most wonderful evening and met some lovely people. I felt humbled to be there if I’m honest. I hadn’t realised what I do was special!
The following Beacon Academy teaching staff were also “Highly Commended” for their outstanding contribution:
- Ms Mortlock, Teacher of English
- Mr Cryle, Teacher of Music
- Mrs Noble, Teacher of Modern Foreign Languages
- Mr Jefcoate, Director of Learning Creative Media
The inaugural event was organised by children’s charity School Inspirational Services. The awards celebrate the achievements of educators, support staff and school volunteers across the county. Anyone who does paid or unpaid work in a school can be nominated, and anyone can nominate them – colleagues, parents and pupils. From a total of three hundred nominees, a panel of judges selected winners for twenty seven district awards and fourteen overall champions. The 2018 ceremony was held in Brighton on 13th June.
Beacon Academy would like to thank everyone that made nominations for the school.
