Licensing checks across Wealden

Sussex Police’s Licensing Officer has recently been visiting licensed premises in Wealden to educate owners and staff about “proxy sales” of alcohol. This is the term used when a person commits an offence buying alcohol on behalf of children.

On Saturday 22nd June, the officer identified premises in Crowborough that was responsible for alcohol sales to a 14 year old. The sales assistant has been prosecuted.

A person commits an offence if they buy or attempt to buy alcohol on behalf of someone under 18. It is also an offence for a person to buy or attempt to buy alcohol for someone under 18 to drink on licensed premises.

Do you have information about a licensed premises selling alcohol to those underage? You can report it to Sussex Police via 101, online at sussex.police.uk or anonymously via Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.

Sussex Police take a zero tolerance approach to those that place children at risk. Any information they receive will be followed up and appropriate action to address the issue.
