Crowborough’s PCSO’s were in Waitrose this morning to raise awareness about domestic abuse.
PCSO’s Marion Keeton, Hannah Williams, Tamara Bennett and Chris Harrison were asking shoppers to pledge their support by leaving their hand-print to symbolise: ‘These hands are not for hurting.’
Yesterday was White Ribbon Day and Sussex Police and partners launched their campaign aimed at encouraging all victims of domestic abuse to report incidents earlier before the abuse escalates, and at raising awareness of White Ribbon UK, an international organisation working to involve men in opposing violence and abuse against women.
Sussex Police was the first police force in England to be awarded White Ribbon status in recognition of the work being done to tackle domestic abuse. Yesterday, East Sussex County Council was also awarded a White Ribbon in recognition of their commitment.

Detective Superintendent Paul Furnell, Head of Safeguarding and Investigations, said:
As we approach Christmas and the New Year generally we see a rise in reports of domestic abuse in Surrey and Sussex. This may be due to excessive alcohol consumption, people spending more time at home, or financial pressures, but whatever the reason there are no excuses.
Abuse is something you do not have to put up with. This is a widespread social problem that affects a variety of people but there is a lot of help available, not only from Sussex Police.
The White Ribbon is a symbol of hope for a world where people can live free from the fear of violence and abuse. By wearing a White Ribbon pin badge, you can show your support in challenging the acceptability of violence by becoming involved in challenging attitudes and behaviour, and helping women to break the silence.
Visit the White Ribbon Campaign site to pledge your support and to find out more details.
The event in Crowborough today was part of a series of activities across Sussex to raise awareness. The campaign will be backed by poster advertising on the rear of buses and on bus shelters.
