Puddle Ducks, which runs baby and toddler swimming classes in Crowborough and Eridge, has raised an impressive £945.81 for a local children’s charity, Chailey Heritage, by holding fundraising ‘pyjama parties’.
Chailey Heritage Foundation will be putting the money towards additional hoists to assist in lifting pupils in and out of its hydrotherapy pool for swimming sessions. Everyone at Puddle Ducks is really pleased that the money will be used to help children enjoy the water and see it as a wonderful outcome of their fundraising effort.
Clive Relf, who runs the classes with his wife Lindsay, explains the natural affinity between Puddle Ducks and its chosen charity:
Chailey Heritage Foundation are experts in creating possibilities for children and young people with complex disabilities. We believe all young people should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential and we are delighted to be able to help them raise funds for special equipment that makes a real difference to their lives.
Each term we hold special classes where we have a real focus on fun, but there’s a serious message behind it. Being in water in clothes helps children to realise how it could feel if they got into trouble while out playing. In a controlled environment in a pool they can learn how to cope with this situation, so if it unfortunately happened out there in the real world, they’d be more equipped to deal with it.
No other company combines swimming and life-saving in the way we do – water safety is a structured and integral part of Puddle Ducks’ pre-school classes, with a focus for the children on saving other people’s lives as well as their own. It’s always an incredibly proud day for both parents and teachers, and being able to fundraise for Chailey Heritage Foundation at the same time really is the icing on the cake.
Locally Puddle Ducks runs classes at Bowles Outdoor Centre in Eridge and Ashdown Primary School (formery called herne) in Crowborough, as well as other pools across East Sussex and West Kent.
Clive Relf explains that each Puddle Ducks class is limited to nine babies or toddlers:
What really sets Puddle Ducks apart, though is that our classes are based on age, not ability, so that children are learning amongst their peers. Our award winning teachers are trained to recognise and work with different ability levels within the same group, so babies and toddlers are given an individually tailored swim programme that builds their confidence and lets little ones learn at their own pace. This tried and tested method is the way babies and toddlers make the most progress.
