Proposal for 26 homes off Western Road

Update (Feb 2021): This application was refused by the Planning Committee on 15th October 2020 because the greenfield site lies outside of any designated development boundary and it is alleged the development would harm the Low Weald landscape. However, Wealden District Council does not have a 5 year housing land supply, and as such a presumption in favour applies.

The Council’s planning officers had recommended approval, subject to a number of conditions; however Councillors voted by a 7-2 majority to refuse the application (1 abstention).

As is their right, the applicant Millbrook Designer Homes have submitted an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate. A Government appointed independent Planning Inspector will determine the appeal. See the appeal documentation here: WD/2020/0893/MAJ (wealden.gov.uk). Interested parties can make representation on the Planning Inspectorate website by 25th March: Case ID 3265449.

The 4½ acre site is at the junction of Western Road and Hadlow Down Road, with access off Tubwell Lane. The homes will be a mix of apartments, chalet bungalows, terraced houses and town houses.

The applicant proposes the following mix of sizes:

  • 4 x one-bedroomed apartments
  • 6 x two-bedroom apartments
  • 5 x two-bedroom houses
  • 7 x three-bedroom houses
  • 4 x four-bedroom houses

Following policy there will be 35% affordable housing. Parking will be provided for 84 vehicles. The applicant proposes to build a 12-space car park for the primary school staff to use. The properties will be constructed using tradition materials: brick with clay hanging tiles on the upper stories and timber weatherboarding.

The public have until 24th July to submit their comments for consideration by the planning authority: WD/2020/0893/MAJ.
