New bridge and lifts at Crowborough Station

The proposal is an Access for All Scheme which involves the erection of a bridge with stair and lift access to provide step free access to Platform 2.

Currently the down line isn’t accessible for mobility problems, and is difficult for other people to use with prams or lots of luggage.

The new bridge will be constructed approximately about 4m to the South West (down the line towards Uckfield) of the station building.

The existing bridge will be removed once the scheme is complete.

As the application relates to a operational railway, planning will be granted virtue of permitted development rights. As the covering letter explains, approval cannot be refused by the planning authority unless they are “satisfied the development ought to be and could reasonably be carried out elsewhere on the land, or the design or external appearance would injure the amenity of the neighbourhood and is reasonably capable of modification so as to avoid such injury.”

The final colour is under discussion with Wealden District Council.

  1. Great! About time wheelchair and pushchair users were treated as normal human beings. Don’t like the bright green, even though it’s Southern’s traditional colour. How about the cream, their other colour? Less in your face.
