Residents of Nevill Court welcome their MP

Sussex Housing & Care is highlighting the contribution supported housing makes to Crowborough, by welcoming Nus Ghani MP to visit homes of older people at their Nevill Court sheltered housing scheme in Crowborough, as part of the national ‘Starts at Home’ campaign.

Starts at Home, now in its second year and run by the National Housing Federation, celebrates how supported housing helps hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people regain their independence and confidence.

June Lewes, resident at Nevill Court said:

It’s very nice living in supported housing because you’ve got someone on hand if you need help. I’m nearly blind and the people here are very helpful.

Sussex Housing & Care’s support comes as uncertainty surrounds the future funding of supported housing.  The National Housing Federation and its members are campaigning to persuade the Government to commit to ensuring that every person who needs extra support has a home that meets their needs.

Tracy Evans, Chief Executive at Sussex Housing & Care said:

Sussex Housing & Care provide high quality sheltered housing and care home places for people over the age of 55.  Our residents have scheme manager support, designed to facilitate residents independence and help them live their later lives to the full. We support Starts at Home and call for supported housing to be put on a secure and sustainable footing.

As part of the campaign, Sussex Housing & Care is calling on Nus Ghani MP to champion supported housing in Parliament.  Nus said:

It was a pleasure to visit Nevill Court to meet and have a chat with some of the residents, seeing first-hand the difference such a facility makes.  I would like to thank all the staff for their hospitality, and especially for all the hard work they do day in and day out.

Supported housing plays a vital role for many vulnerable people. I am pleased the Government is committed to engaging with the sector, and earlier this year ran a consultation on developing a new funding model for supported housing.  I welcome the considered approach the Government has taken.
