Local History Group

U3A LogoA new local history group is starting in Crowborough next week.

The existing U3A – University of The Third Age group which meets on a Thursday has grown so popular they have had to start a second session, imaginatively called “U3A Local History 2”.

The U3A is a self-help organisation for older people, no longer in full-time employment, providing educational, creative and leisure opportunities in a friendly environment.  It draws upon the knowledge and expertise of local members to organise and provide interest groups in which to share their knowledge.  There are over 60 groups in Crowborough with topics as diverse as Aviation to Yoga and Art to Wine.  For details of all the groups see their website.

The new Local History group will meet at Crowborough Community Centre on the first Tuesday of every month.

The first talk on Tuesday 3rd June at 2pm is about the history of Luxford Farm on Eridge Road.  The owners Sue and Graham James are giving a presentation on their lovely home, its amazing history, and the renovation project they have undertaken.  The talk will be illustrated by photos.

Anyone is interested in local history are most welcome to attend.  The meeting will be in Room 2 (downstairs) at the Crowborough Community Centre.

The cost of the first meeting is only £1.00.  Or you can sign-up for the first 6 months for £6.00 by cash or cheque payable to “Crowborough U3A”.  Tea and
coffee will be available at £1.50.

They have a full calendar of speakers right through until Christmas, and would love to see new members go along:

July – Travels Round Edwardian Crowborough 1901 to 1910 – Peter Macloud
August – Burrswood – Susie Pinder
September – Escorted Tour of Cranbrook Windmill
October – Then and Now: Photos for Local History – Des Thomas
