Jarvis Brook Fun Day

Days after a major event to raise funds to convert a derelict building into a community centre, the project gets planning permission.

Last Saturday the community came out in force to support the inaugural Fun Day in aid of the new Community Centre.

Jarvis-Brook-Fun-Day-TombolAs well as a tombola, raffle and other stalls, there was a BBQ and other refreshments available, and a whole range of activities and children’s entertainment.

Funds raised at the Fun Day will go towards the new Jarvis Brook Community Centre, called ‘The Hub’.  As the previous article explained, the Community Association in partnership with Wealden District Council are working to convert the former youth centre, known as JBs, into a building for the whole community to use.

Planning permission has just this week been granted to allow the extension and redesign of the building to go ahead.  Wealden District Council owns the building and the Council have agreed to use £40,000 from their ‘Housing Services Community and Environmental Budget’ towards the project.

In order to get the project off the ground the Trustees say they need to raise a minimum of £15,000.  Once this is achieved, they can then apply for a number of other grants to complete the project.

Dave Neeves, who is a Trustee of the Jarvis Brook Community Centre Project said:

We aim to have it available for both residents and businesses to use as a community centre should be used. Mother and toddler groups, local youth centre and even conferences.

For a number of years, many have tried and sadly failed, to get JB’s up and running for any length of time so we are trying something new.  We wish to get the local youngsters involved in any way they feel fit so they will look after the Hub.  It will be self sufficient as practicably as possible.  Solar panels and rainwater systems will be installed so the Hub will have low running costs.  It will also have anti-vandal systems installed.
