Fox Taverns have applied for planning permission to build three 2-bedroomed houses in the garden of The Welcome Stranger.
The pub, renamed the Railway Tavern, has been closed for since 2016. Shepherd Neame sold the property to Fox Taverns in January 2017.
In the Design and Access Statement, the applicant described their intention to continue to try and bring the pub back into use:
As there are a number of other pubs locally, this would continue to be a challenge that forced the pub to close some years ago, but with a coffee, food, and more of a café concept to the Pub, this may be viable at an affordable tenancy arrangement, with allowing some enabling development on the site.
The third house would be further back than the other two, because of the position of an electrical sub-station adjacent to the pub on Farningham Road.
Neighbours and members of the public have until 20th May to comment on the application on Wealden District Council’s website: WD/2020/0629/F.
