Care UK’s Crowborough care home, Heather View, is opening its doors to the local community this December and inviting members of the public to attend two free events.
How We Care on Thursday 4th December
Following a seal of a approval by the care watchdog, the team at Heather View on Beacon Road will host a ‘how we care event’ on Thursday 4th December, between 2 and 4pm. Designed to provide local people with the chance to get a behind-the-scenes insight into life at the care home, there will be information available on how the team tailor each day towards the individual needs of residents and how families can play a part in personalising rooms as well as the benefits of the home’s approach to activity-based care.
Christmas Fair on Saturday 6th December
Following this, visitors can get into the festive spirit on Saturday 6th December when the home is hosting a Christmas fair, during which the Crowborough Players will be giving a sneak preview of their forthcoming pantomime Babes in the Wood. The home will be transformed into a Santa’s grotto with seasonal activities for all ages including a raffle and tombola. There will also be a variety of craft stalls, giving people in East Sussex the chance to find the perfect Christmas gift for loved ones.
Home Manager, Trish Banks, explained why she is throwing open the doors to Heather View for the events:
Following our recent successful CQC report, we wanted to take the opportunity to open the doors and give people in Crowborough a chance to see behind the scenes at Heather View.
The festive season is the perfect time for families and the local community to come together and enjoy everything this time of year has to offer. We’re very proud of the care environment we have created here at Heather View and we’re looking forward to bringing some Christmas cheer to the residents and people of Crowborough and surrounding areas.
Care Quality Commission Inspections
In their recent report the Care Quality Commission praised Trish Banks for the improvements she has made since she took charge in February this year. After their previous inspections in August 2013, the CQC told Care UK improvements were required in six out of seven areas.
Situated at Beacon Road, Heather View provides specialist care for people with dementia who have the most complex care needs, as well as offering residential, nursing and respite care. The large purpose built home can care for up to 74 people, but at the time of the inspection 49 people were living there.
Heather View, has now met all five current standards, and during the last unannounced inspection, staff were highly praised by relatives and residents.
The Care Quality Commission report said residents were cared for by kind and caring staff who were observed to be warm and compassionate. It was also reported that the Home Manager and care workers had a good understanding of residents’ individual care needs and operated an open door policy for residents and their families.
The report noted how the care home had a number of systems in place to monitor care quality, and staff regularly had internal meetings to share information about residents and to discuss training and performance.
One resident commented: “The staff are really very kind and helpful.”, While another resident said: “It’s so lovely here.”
The report also expressed how privacy was highly valued in the home with staff respecting the privacy of residents. It was noted there are various areas in the home where residents can meet with their families in private and all residents had access to phones in their rooms.
Inspectors were pleased to see all residents bedrooms were personalised with photographs, pictures and personal items. They also noted the use of personalised pictures and objects in the corridors to help residents identify their own rooms.
Heather View is a state-of-the-art care home which is designed to enable its residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives. The care home has its very own cinema and hairdressers, and there is plenty of space both indoors and out for relaxation and recreation
