Cadet Hayley Poole of 1414 Crowborough Air Cadets has won a national competition to design a flag to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, which is on Friday 8th May.
Hayley, who lives in Cross in Hand, was asked to take part in the Radio 2 Breakfast Show this morning as part of the celebrations for Captain (now Colonel) Tom Moore’s 100th birthday. She said:
I was inspired by your incredible story and may I take this opportunity to explain mine.
I recently entered a national competition to design a flag to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, set-up by Newton and Newton flags.
I feel the current challenge represented by Covid-19 is the closest we have had since the great efforts of you and your comrades in the Second World War.
When looking back at VE Day, it really shows how teamwork and faith is the key to success and this can relate to all of our key workers acting as the foot soldiers fighting this invisible battle.
I would wish to dedicate the first VE Day flag to you as a token of my appreciation of all of your hardwork.
Happy 100th Captain Tom.
