First baby born at Crowborough Birthing Centre

Congratulations to Megan and Matt who were the first parents to give birth at the Crowborough Birthing Centre. Crowborough Hospital re-opened for births on Monday (4th April) – and baby Ruby, weighing 8 pounds, arrived that night at twenty to midnight.

Proud parents Megan and Matt introduce Ruby, with a delighted Nicolette McCarthy (Birth Centre Matron) celebrating the first birth after reopening for births.

Megan had a water birth with the support of midwives Felicity and Chloe. Antenatal clinics and post-natal checks on newborns have been taking place at Crowborough Hospital since early 2021; but sadly for the last 15 months, a shortage of midwives has meant that the only option for giving birth has been the obstetric unit at Tunbridge Wells Hospital.

In preparation for the re-opening, during the last few weeks midwives have been offering pregnant women above 34-weeks “birth place assessments”, if they were hoping to be able to have their baby at Crowborough Hospital.

New Matron, Nicolette McCarthy told Crowborough Life that the Birthing Centre is now able to care for pregnant women in its “much-loved homely setting” right through their pregnancy, the birth itself and the first few post-natal days.

We were all so thrilled that baby Ruby arrived on our first day of re-opening for births, and absolutely delighted for Megan and Matt.

On a personal note, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me in my new role as Matron at Crowborough. This has enabled us to re-establish a safe “out of hospital” birth provision for women expecting a low-risk labour. Our amazing team is delighted to offer this service to both local and ‘out of area’ women.

Pregnant women who would like further information are asked to contact the Crowborough Birth Centre or discuss their birth options with their community midwife.

All local women can benefit from the local antenatal clinics offered, but some women may be advised to choose to have the birth itself at the Pembury obstetric unit if the pregnancy if not straightforward. The birth centre midwives are skilled at giving careful advice about this and helping women to make an informed choice. The birth centre can be contacted on 01892 654080.
