Beacon Academy’s curling team were recently presented with their new jackets, thanks to their sponsor East Sussex firm of solicitors Dawson Hart.
The Beacon Academy Curling team was founded in October 2013 when 8 ambitious, brave, and excited students signed-up to learn about the winter Olympic sport. Since then, the club has grown to 24 students which means that the ice rink is at maximum capacity when they visit.
The club practice session and take part in competitions at England’s only dedicated ice curling rink near Tunbridge Wells.
The students dedicate 3 hours each week to their training, and are improving each time they take to the ice. The students also have further opportunities beyond representing their school, with 9 of them being invited to take part in the England Elite Coaching sessions. Players from this elite programme compete each year to represent England at the World Junior Championships. As a result of winning this year’s playdowns, Beacon Academy students Joe Sugden and Felix Price will be heading to Finland in January to play for their country at the highest junior level.
Paula Geear, from the team’s sponsor said:
Dawson Hart Solicitors are delighted to sponsor the Beacon Curling Team. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to participate in a different type of sport. They are a very professional and enthusiastic team and we are proud to be associated with them. We wish them every success in the forthcoming season.
As the club continues to grow, more and more students at Beacon Academy are learning about this incredible winter sport which is not familiar to many in this country. Last weekend some of the students took part in the first ever Kent & Sussex Bonspiel at the Fenton’s Rink. The curling tournament involved players from Belgium, Canada, and the United States. At the end of the season they will all be playing in the English Schools Curling Championships.
Mr Rees team’s coach said:
All of these opportunities are enriching for our students and are something unique that Beacon Academy is very proud to offer.
