Police station to move

Former Town Hall, The Broadway in Crowborough

A planning application has been submitted to convert the Town Hall into a new police station for Crowborough.

The building, located on the corner of The Broadway and Croham Road, has been vacant since May when the Town Council moved to Pine Grove.

There would be no alterations to the exterior, except for a new police sign. Internally new partition walls will be constructed to divide the old council chamber.

The proposed development would provide a new, modern policing facility in the Town Centre of Crowborough. This is a highly sustainable location which would improve community safety and visibility of policing in the town.

Planning Statement 30/09/19

If the move goes ahead the new Police Station will operate in a similar way as the existing one it will replace further down Crowborough Hill. The front counter will open Monday to Friday from 10am until 2pm.

As there are no neighbourhood or response teams based in Crowborough, the station will only be used as a drop-in facility for officers, staff and the town warden. The building has 2/3 parking spaces under the Croham Road end. There are also three parking spaces (including one disabled space) in the parking bay at the front of the building on the Broadway. The application explains the use of police sirens and emergency blue lights are controlled by legislation to prevent excessive use, particularly at night, so as not to cause a nuisance to residents.

A statement from Sussex Police explains the building is still owned by Crowborough Town Council:

In Crowborough we are currently working with our partners at the Town Council to explore the option of purchasing their old Council Offices in the High Street. The purchase would be subject to receiving planning permission and the successful completion of the legal process. At this time we continue to operate from the existing police station in Crowborough Hill.

Police Houses on Crowborough Hill

No further explanation has been provided at this stage about what would happen to the existing Police Station and adjacent police houses on Crowborough Hill near North Beeches Road.

The building became the Town Hall, at about the time Crowborough changed from a parish to a town in 1988. Before then it was the old library.

  1. Open 4 hours a day, Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) for a town of 30,000 people. What an absolute joke. Policing in Crowborough is a shambles.
