East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a “down” horse in Polegate this afternoon (12th January).

The specialist 4 x 4 vehicle from Crowborough, a crew from Rye and an officer were mobilised to the scene on Sayerland Lane just after 1pm.

On arrival it was confirmed that a 29 year old mare in the stable area was unable to stand up by itself.  A vet was called to support the incident.

Sadly, despite the work of the crews and vet, the horse’s condition was too serious and it could not be saved.

Firefighters left the scene at 3.25pm.

Call sign Whiskey 13, the animal rescue unit covers the whole of Sussex and parts of Kent and have been nationally recognised for their expertise.  It consists of a purpose-built Mercedes Unimog 4 x 4 off-road appliance.  Fitted with a hydraulic crane capable of lifting farm animals from open water, ditches etc.  The unit is also equipped with a floating rescue path, for use on shallow water or unstable ground such as quicksand or marsh.
