Crowborough’s rescue unit called to help a horse stuck in a pond


East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were called to assist a horse stuck in a pond at a farm in Mere’s Lane, Five Ashes yesterday evening (Monday 9 February).

A crew from Mayfield Community Fire Station along with the animal rescue unit and a specialist 4 x 4 vehicle from Crowborough Community Fire Station were called out at 6.25pm.

The conditions were too muddy for the animal rescue unit to get close to the horse so crews carried equipment and lighting to the scene.

Firefighters wearing dry suits for protection used bow saws and battery powered saws to clear a path for the horse to walk out of the pond.  The horse was not injured.

Call sign Whiskey 13, the animal rescue unit consists of a purpose-built Mercedes Unimog 4 x 4 off-road appliance. Fitted with a hydraulic crane capable of lifting Farm animals from open water, ditches etc.  The rescue unit is also equipped with floating rescue paths.
