Crowborough Hockey Club celebrates 50 years

Crowborough Hockey Club celebrated reaching its 50th year by holding a men’s and ladies’ “Past vs Present” games last weekend.

The matches at the Astroturf Pitch at Beacon Academy proved hugely competitive with umpires David James and Jon Bell doing a superb job to marshal a mix of old and new rules.

The Ladies game proved a tight encounter.  The past side, managed by Saskia Edwards, took the spoils with a 4-2 victory.  Goals were scored by Julia Green, Bex Kift and Sam Williams.  This was despite current keeper Sandra Hepple saving a penalty flick.

The combative element stepped up even further when the two men’s sides came to the Astro.  The game featured a bully to start the second half between keepers Pete Bradshaw and Mike Orchard which produced the sprint of the season for retreating players.  The past team eventually surged to a 6-3 victory with great hockey played by both sides.

After the games, 100 plus players and supporters returned to celebrate to the Wolfe, the clubhouse that has seen them through most of their 50 years.  Club Chairman Ben Churchward said:

It has been a real pleasure to get everyone back together playing hockey and enjoying meeting with old friends.

Current President Hilary Brown added:

We have a proud past and a really positive future to look forward to – hopefully with a new Astro to play on soon.

There is currently a fundraising campaign to replace Beacon Academy’s AstroTurf surface.
