The finalists for the Sussex Sports Awards have been announced.

Mick Croft, President of Crowborough Athletic FC, is shortlisted for the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award. Mick has recently celebrated his 81st birthday, bringing his Association with the football club to a mere 75 years.

The award honours someone who has made a major impact on the world of sport in Sussex during their lifetime.

He has held just about every position at the Crows and has cleaned, mended and helped build most things. This extract from his nomination makes it clear his willingness to “get stuck-in”:

He is ever present at first team games, home and away. On away matches he helps with the kit and always ensures that the away changing room is left just as the Team found it. On a home Saturday evening you will find him locking down the stadium, in the laundry room washing kit after he has tied up the nets, collected the corner flags and done an initial clean of the Changing Rooms. Only when all of his Chores are done will he join everyone in the Clubhouse for a well-deserved pint

The annual award ceremony has historically been a black-tie affair, held on the last Friday of November, awarding those who have gone the extra mile in the county’s sport sector as well as high-achieving individuals and teams.

This year Active Sussex have received over 150 outstanding nominations for this year’s five awards: Community Engagement, Volunteer of the Year, Sports Personality of the Year, Outstanding Contribution to Sport and Inclusion and Diversity Award.

Sussex Sport Awards 2020

With the restrictions around Covid-19, the 2020 awards will be a week-long ‘virtual’ celebration on social media from Monday 23rd November, showcasing all that’s been achieved for physical activity and sport in Sussex this year. The winners of the five coveted awards will be announced on Friday 27th November. Sadie Mason MBE, Active Sussex Chief Executive, commented:

It has been a strange year for sport and physical activity, but the Sussex community has reacted incredibly, refusing to surrender when facing the biggest of challenges. This has been reflected in the high level of award nominations we have received this year, demonstrating the exceptional work that sports clubs, organisations and individuals have been doing across Sussex, helping to keep people moving during lockdown. Picking winners from this fantastic shortlist of finalists will be a challenge, but it shows that the future is bright for local sport and physical activity, despite the challenges that COVID-19 has brought. I wish all the finalists the very best of luck as we celebrate a very different, but very important Sussex Sports Awards 2020.
