Crowborough Town Council have confirmed the annual Boundary Walk will be taking place on Sunday 9th May. However this year arrangements will be slightly modified to ensure participants are kept safe from Covid-19.

The Crowborough Boundary Walk was cancelled last year, because of the pandemic.

This time all walkers will be required to pre-register to get allocated a start-time. People will only be allowed to gather in groups of six people.

Ancient custom of Beating the Bounds

Crowborough is surrounded by the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the walk takes in some terrific views of the magnificent countryside around Crowborough.

When maps were rare it was usual for members of the community to walk the boundaries of their parish. The procession was led by the parish priest on Rogation Sunday. The priest, together with church wardens, would lead the walkers. Armed with birch or willow boughs, the processional walkers would beat the parish boundary markers. Priests would pray for the protection of the harvest to come. Sometimes young boys of the parish would be violently bumped onto the boundary stones to make them remember where the boundary ran.

The ceremony had an important purpose. Checking and remembering the boundary was a way of preventing encroachment by neighbours. Thankfully, we no longer beat young people who want to take part in the walk and there is a map to guide you.

Crowborough’s Boundary Walk was mentioned in the Sunday Times, as one of the community events that takes place in our town.
