“Appalling” service from Kier


With missed bin collections being blamed on driver shortages and vehicle breakdowns, Wealden District Council has decided to bring in a temporary contractor to clear the bottles, cardboard and cans mounting-up at recycling points [Bring Sites] across the district.

Yesterday Councillor Roy Galley, portfolio holder for Waste and Recycling told his Cabinet colleagues that he hopes this measure will allow Kier to focus its efforts on household waste and recycling collections:

Recycling point [Bring Site] in the Croft Road car park in Crowborough, taken on 11th July.

The Service we are receiving for Kier at the moment is appalling and there is no immediate prospect of that getting significantly better. The problems are extended through-out Wealden.

We cannot allow this situation to continue so we have notified Kier that we intend to invoke our step-in rights which will allow us to bring in outside contractors this week to clear Brings Sites.  This should relieve the current pressure on Kier and allow their crews to work elsewhere.

Report a Missed Collection

If your bin is not emptied, the advice from the Council is to register the missed collection by 5pm the following day.  You can do so through their website or by calling 01892 653311.

If Kier fail to collect a bin two working days after a missed bin has been notified Wealden District Council can apply financial defaults.  These range from between £5 -£20 a bin depending on the circumstances.  Financial defaults can only be applied for those households notifying a missed bin, not every property on a street.  This is because they do not know for certain whether all households put their bins out for collection.

A Kier spokesperson said:

We would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the residents of Wealden for the recent disruptions to service.  It does not fall in-line with our usual high levels of service and we are doing everything we can to rectify this.

We are actively recruiting new staff to allow us to fully deploy during the busy summer period.  We appreciate all the support from residents as our teams work in these very hot conditions and we would ask for their continued support during this time.  We are committed to serving the residents of Wealden and we are confident these new measures will have a quick and positive impact to service.

Wealden District Council outsourced its waste collection service in 2013.  Last year it was announced that the 10-year contract between Kier and four East Sussex councils, including Wealden, would end early due to ‘significant’ change in the recycling market, according to the company.  A new contractor will be appointed to takeover from June 2019.

  1. And if you phone WDC you can be kept holding 9 minutes at your expense. Do report though, as WDC is going to fine Kier on our behalf, so the more reports the better.

Why is it that these companies always think that SORRY makes it right, it does not, get your act together or Wealden get someone who can, why did Wealden think it was cheaper to employ outside contractors and get rid of their own force, short term maybe but its not working now, like most private enterprises that say they can and mess it up.

  3. I tried to report a missed bin collection this morning but was unable to as operatives blocked me. I left out cardboard boxes, from moving, after checking the website that extra recycling could be left out by bin. All left today and told on my report operatives had prevented me reporting missed bin collection due to ” excess” ……

    Appalling service the cardboard will be out for another 2 weeks next to a main road which could cause obstruction on the A267 as I had to get help to get it out as I have mobility issues. No attempt to remove any of it or contact me as I watched them!

  4. we, as consumers, should be demanding WDC refund a proportion of our Council Tax for non delivery of services- WDC are making ‘their’ problem our – alternatively merely take your refuse to WDC offices and dump it on their doorstep – suspect that would cleared up fairly quickly
