Youngster to switch-on the Christmas lights

Rather than a celebrity, a local child is being given the opportunity to switch on the Crowborough’s lights this year.

In the previous years, a celebrity appearing in pantomime in Tunbridge Wells has performed the duty.  Last year it was former Hi-Di-Hi actress Sue Pollard who was appearing in Snow White.  Through the mutually beneficial deal, Crowborough has secured a celebrity to entertain the crowds at the event, and the Assembly Hall Theatre gets free publicity for the Panto and use of the town’s poster boards.

The Council’s “Communications and Events Committee” is responsible for overseeing the event.  At the time of the last meeting on the 20th September, it was minuted that the Deputy Clerk was still waiting to hear if former EastEnders actor Michael Greco, who is playing Abanazar this year, was still able to switch on the lights.

The Town Council has however just announced a competition to choose a child to switch-on the lights.  It is open to children between the ages of five and 11.

To enter youngsters need to complete the following sentence: “I think I should switch on the Christmas lights because…”

Entry forms need to be sent to the Town Hall by 12noon on Friday 17th November.

The Christmas Cracker event is on Friday 24th November starting at 4pm.  Santa’s Grotta will open slightly earlier at 3.30pm.  There will be street entertainers, stalls and carols.  The Christmas lights will be angels with flickering wings.  The lucky child will switch-on the Christmas lights at 6pm.
