TV and radio presenter Gloria Hunniford is a keen supporter of issues that affect older people.  She aims to raise the profile of the event and encourage people from across the country to visit their local care home for the day.   Gloria Hunniford is encouraging care homes to be as creative as possible with the activities they put on, and to encourage their local community to visit and perhaps even become volunteers in their local care home.

Sevenoaks resident Gloria Hunniford, is National Care Home Open Day Ambassador:

The National Care Home Open Day is a great opportunity for people to see for themselves the quality of the care services in their neighbourhoods, to make informed assessments of the range of what is available and the standard of care.

Care homes and their residents are a very important but sometimes overlooked part of our society. The National Care Home Open Day will help strengthen the relationships between care home residents, staff and their next door neighbours. It may even encourage a few people to think about volunteering to do something during the rest of the year to support and befriend residents in local care homes.

Many of the Care Homes will be putting on special activities for residents and members of the local community to take part in.

At Warren Drive Care Home on Fielden Road they’ll be serving Cream Teas between 2.30 and 6.30pm, with entertainment and stalls, and opportunity to see around the home.  Heather Hawthorn the Home Manager said:

Our residents are keen to take an active part in  the local community, it is not always possible for individuals to get out and about locally as much as they would like, therefore the Open Day provides a valuable opportunity for residents to meet new people and socialise.

At Heather View on Beacon Road, they’ll be a display of food and fashions from around the world and members of staff will be their in traditional dress from countries including China, Italy and the Philippines.  A local travel agent will be putting on a presentation of holidays and trips available for people living with dementia.

Musician Jon McDevitt will be performing famous 60s songs at Woodlands Residential Care Home on Beacon Road.  Michelle Wallis is the Home Manager there:

National Care Home open day is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our home and for you to have a relaxed visit, looking around the property and meeting our staff team, residents and their family and friends.  There is no better way to find out what a care home is really like than speaking to the people who experience it first hand.

Trish Banks, Home Manager at Heather View, said:

We are looking forward to welcoming members of the public to Heather View.

Some people do still have misconceptions about care homes, and it is therefore necessary to dispel any myths and to demystify everyday life in a care home.  We are very proud of Heather View and we are keen to take the opportunity to showcase everything the care home has to offer and the difference it makes to our residents’ lives.

On Friday 20th June, visitors will have the opportunity to get to know the team here, and to find out more about the modern care environment and our approach to activity-based care.  We have set out to create a fun and entertaining event for the local community, as well as our residents and their families, and we hope members of the public will join us for what promises to be a memorable day.
