Last call to stand for Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner


The closing date for nominations to stand as a candidate in the forthcoming Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner elections is 4pm on Thursday 7th April.

Sussex Police Crime Commissioner logoThe role of Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner is open to anyone over 18 who is on the electoral roll of one of the districts or boroughs in East or West Sussex, or Brighton & Hove.  Candidates will need to have the backing of 100 local electors and provide a £5,000 deposit before their nominations are accepted.   The election will be held on Thursday 5th May.

The current Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner is Katy Bourne.

The Returning Officer for the whole of Sussex, which includes 13 local authorities, is the Chief Executive of Wealden District Council, Charlie Lant.  The count will be co-ordinated from the East Sussex National near Uckfield.  Mr Lant said:

The Police and Crime Commissioner is responsible for policing across Sussex.

They bring a public voice to policing.  Their job is to ensure the policing needs of the public are met as effectively as possible and overseeing how crime is tackled by the police.

A number of candidates have already come forward to stand in the 5th May elections.  There are certain jobs which disqualify you from standing including being a Police Officer, Police Community Support Officer, judge or an employee of a council in the Police Force area.  You will not be allowed to stand if you have ever been convicted of an imprisonable offence.
