50th Anniversary of the United Church

This year is the 50th anniversary of the coming together of two Church congregations in Crowborough to form the United Church on Croft Road.

The United Church is a joint United Reformed and Methodist Church, combining the former Parker Memorial Congregational Church, and Crowborough Methodist (former Wesleyan) Church.

The idea of bringing the two churches in Croft Road together was the idea of the Methodist Minister the Revd Peter Hudson.  The churches started talks in 1965, and from the following July, joint services started being held, initially with both of the churches being used.

The official inception of the United Church was held on 7th October 1967.  The United Church was based at the Congregational Church on the corner of Croft Road and Myrtle Road.  The former Methodist Church was subsequently sold and redeveloped and is now Wesley Mews next to the M&S petrol station.

Colin Riley said:

The ecumenical movement was strong in those days and it is to the credit of the two Crowborough churches that they became two of the first churches to unite.

Over the weekend of Friday 29th September to Monday 2nd October, a series of special events will be held to mark the anniversary.

A Special Communion Service will be held on Sunday at 10.30am.  Afterwards over 70 current and past members will be attending a celebratory lunch.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a Tea Party with children’s events at 2.30pm followed by adults at 3.15pm.

And over the weekend there will be a Harvest Flower Festival backed by members of other churches and the Crowborough Flower Club open from 10am until 4pm each day (except Monday 10am until 12noon).  Donations towards Crowborough-based charity World in Need.
