Taekwon-Do instructor Philip Lear was induted into the MAI Black Belt Hall of Fame last month and this weekend he celebrates his 20th of running Vision Taekwon-Do in Crowborough.

Philip-Lear-Hall-of-FamePhilip Lear told CrowboroughLife:

We have a big weekend as we are running a big Taekwon-Do Seminar at the leisure centre all day on Saturday and then Saturday evening we are having  a big party for 150 people.

I lived in Malaysia from 1994-1996 where I was training with a Master of Taekwon-Do, I returned in May of 1996 as my sister was giving birth to my twin nephews.  I ended up taking over the existing Taekwon-Do class in Crowborough that had about 30 regular members and have been teaching there ever since.  In 1999 I then became a full time instructor giving up the job I had in London and this has been my career ever since.

On 24th April Mr Philip Lear travelled to Staffordshire for the MAI Black Belt Hall of Fame awards.  Martial Arts Illustrated is the longest running martial arts magazine in the UK spanning 3 decades.

He was nominated for the award from Martial Arts Illustrated for the work he has done in the last 20 years for Taekwon-Do in the UK, including organising the World Cup in 2012 and his own personal achievements as a competitor.

The awards ceremony took place at the National Brewery Centre in Burton on Trent with in excess of 400 people from the world of Martial Arts present including Mr Lear’s old England team mate and now famous actor Mr Silvio Simac (aka Joe Maska).  He was presented with a plaque and belt by the editor of MAI magazine Mr Bob Sykes.

In his speech Mr Lear thanked his wife Ellie for all her support over the years and also thanked the boy who bullied him when he was aged 15 back in the 80’s, without whom he would not have got involved in martial arts. Through that experience he dedicated his life to helping others overcome their fears and to reach their potential, inspiring children and adults alike to be strong against adversity.
