Folk music in aid of children’s education in Malawi

The Crowborough Christian Men’s Discussion Group has been supporting a school building project in Malawi.  Over the last ten years they have raised around £60,000 to build a primary school in the Chapsinja village.  They also provide a nursery class, teachers and a meal a day for the children under statutory school age.

On Saturday 18th November, “Remnant” a local harmony trio, are offering an evening of country and folk music in support of the project.

Cive is on guitar, Ken on harmonica, with Chrissie playing bass.  They all sing in three part harmony (most of the time).

The name ‘Remnant’ was chosen as they were all left-overs from other bands.  Their music is varied: folk, pop, country, Irish and anything that lends itself to harmony.  Their playlist includes: Streets of London, Fields of Gold and Whiskey in the Jar.

In support of Starfish Malawi, the Crowborough Men’s Group are now exploring how they might improve the education and training for the oldest pupils who will leave the school in the summer of 2019.

Many pupils leave school for good at the age of 13+ to support their families.  This seems a wasted opportunity, as those who do attend a secondary school are much more likely to get a good job or enter a profession which will, in the long run, enable them to provide much greater support for their families.

In the following coming months they are investigating the following options:

  • sponsoring a few Chapsinja pupils through the four years of secondary education.  Starfish Malawi already runs a similar scheme in other parts of the country.  The notional cost is £720 per pupil for the whole secondary course;
  • funding a number school leavers to follow an apprenticeship scheme with a trustworthy employer to provide the village with vital skills; and/or,
  • the feasibility of providing re-usable or disposable sanitary wear, as girls often miss a significant number of schooldays each month.
