The changes that are being phased-in across East Sussex from 12th April, but changes in the Lewes, Wealden and Eastbourne areas take effect from 19th April. The amendments are as a result of reductions in sudsidies to bus operators to run unprofitable bus routes. East Sussex County Council have made cuts of £1.88 million, largely as a result of the money they receive from central government going down by a third over the past five years.
After 19th April, the bus that runs from Town Row through Rotherfield and then around Crowborough, will only run 3-days per week. North Wealden Community Transport Partnership said the 226 was going to be reduced to 2-days a week, but they pursuaded the County Council to use funds collected as part of the planning process when permission was granted to build Lidls, to also run the service on a Saturday, as well as Tuesdays and Thursdays.
224 Crowborough – Rotherfield – Mayfield – Wadhurst
This service will in future be operated by North Wealden Community Transport Partnership. After the 19th April it will run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (rather than Thursday) to a similar timetable but with additional stops in Rotherfield.
225 Crowborough – Rotherfield – Heathfield – Battle
New Tuesday and Thursday service which incorporates the old 317 and 355 routes. The new service to Battle via Heathfield starts on Tuesday 21st April.
28/29 Tunbridge Wells – Crowborough – Uckfield – Brighton
Brighton & Hove Bus & Coach Company have decided to maintain this service as a commerical operation in the evenings despite the subsidy being withdrawn. However there is a slight reduction in frequency between Lewes and Tunbridge Wells in the early evening on Mondays to Saturdays. From 20th April, the bus that leaves Churchill Square at 5.05pm now terminates at Crowborough Cross, rather than continuing to Tunbridge Wells. There are some minor timing changes on early morning journeys to improve reliability, for example the 7.10am bus to Brighton will leave Crowborough Cross 3 minutes earlier on Mondays to Fridays. There are also some minor timing changes between Uckfield and Tunbridge Wells on Saturday mornings. You are advised to check the timings of the services you use particularly if you travel early morning or in the evening.
